The collaboration between Rama Motori and Tecniwell marks a new milestone in the field of engines for special applications. Tecniwell, a global leader based in Piacenza, Italy, in the design and production of jet grouting equipment, has selected the JD18 engine by John Deere—supplied by Rama Motori—to power a high-performance pump unit dedicated to this specific ground consolidation process.

JD18: high performance for heavy-duty applications
Awarded “Diesel of the Year 2021”, the JD18 engine stands out for its high performance and its lack of exhaust gas after-treatment. Its architecture makes it ideal for heavy-duty applications, ensuring reliability even under the most demanding operating conditions. Tecniwell integrated the JD18 into a high-pressure pump unit, an essential component for jet grouting—an advanced technology used to improve and stabilize soil.

Andrea Perduca, Sales Manager & Business Development at Rama Motori, commented: “A year ago around this time, we introduced this engine at the Reggio Emilia Road Show. Since then, our awareness campaign supporting the JD18 has borne its first fruits. We can now consider this engine—free of after-treatment requirements—as a true all-rounder in the market. Its architecture makes it highly attractive, starting from 522 kilowatts and up, especially considering the challenges that after-treatment systems (ATS) often pose in various operating environments. Although the installed power in jet grouting is used at high speeds, this technology presents certain challenges for engines. The frequent standby moments between injections can negatively affect after-treatment processes, increasing the risk of crystallization inside the SCR system. Our engines must be built to last and ensure consistent performance, proving reliable and cost-effective in terms of maintenance and spare parts. The tests carried out led to excellent results, and just in time for the machine to be showcased at Bauma. In this case, the required power is 677 kilowatts at 1900 rpm.”

A complete, ready-to-use power pack
In addition to the engine, Rama Motori supplied a complete power pack including a radiator, viscous coupling fan, and optimized wiring. This system ensures efficient engine temperature management, reduces parasitic power losses, and simplifies installation thanks to its plug-and-play configuration.
Reliability and ease of maintenance were key factors in Tecniwell’s decision to select the JD18. Thanks to John Deere’s Connected Support system, remote monitoring enables predictive and timely maintenance actions, minimizing downtime and ensuring maximum operational efficiency on site.

Jet Grouting: a cutting-edge technology
Jet grouting is an advanced technique used for soil consolidation and waterproofing, ideal for stabilization work and special foundations. The process involves injecting a high-pressure cement mixture through specialized nozzles, forming solidified columns with high mechanical and hydraulic properties. In this context, the reliability of the engines and pumps used plays a crucial role in ensuring optimal results and continuous operation.
